30 www.randomlake.org The year 2015 has some street con- struction and other improvements com- ing to Random Lake. It's the only Ran- dom Lake in the United States — a village that surrounds a 209-acre lake that bears the same name. Franzen St. will be reconstructed with new utilities. New utilities also will be in- stalled beneath Allen St. with a new sur- face coming in 2016. Sewer and water lines are being extended deep into the vacant commercial/industrial land on the village's eastern boundary. The School District of Random Lake also will be im- plementing improvements approved by taxpayers in the $8.5 million referendum approved by voters in November, 2014. The Random Lake community began to lay its roots in the mid 1800's. Growth followed almost immediately after the completion of the Milwaukee & Northern Railroad in 1872. Random Lake's post of- fice opened on Sept.16, 1872, and busi- nesses began to spring up in the "down- town" area. In August, 1907 the Village of Random Lake was incorporated, separating from the Town of Sherman, and today it cov- ers 1.6 square miles. Some of the earliest businesses included an ice company, a brewery, as well as several taverns/hotels. The first Wilk family store opened in 1880 with farm and building supplies, and to- day shoppers can visit Wilk Furniture & Design in downtown Random Lake. The Doegnitz Hardware Store, which opened in 1908, continues with more than a cen- tury of family ownership and operation. Random Lake features a relaxed atmo- sphere, prevalent in each business, and in the hearty greetings that residents ex- press. Perhaps that comes from living in Random Lake ✪ Random Lake ✪ Random Lake ✪ Random Lake Random Lake
