22 www.randomlake.org Gibbsville, a village in the Town of Lima, was settled in 1836, by three brothers whose last name it bears: James H., Benjamin L., and John D. Gibbs. James and John Gibbs, along with William and Peter Palmer, began farm- ing in the Gibbsville area in 1840. Benjamin Gibbs settled on an adjoining tract. It is said that the first school in the town of Lima was held in the home of John D. Gibbs around 1840. A "modern" school was built around 1900, but it closed in 1977 when students were moved to the Oostburg schools. Currently, places of interest in Gibbsville are Gibbsville Reformed Church, Gibbsville Cheese Company, Gibbsville Orchard, and The General Store. Gibbsville Implement, originally located in Gibbsville, has relocated west to Highway 57, but still retains its ties with Gibbsville.
