The Lake Erie marshes are prime spots for viewing migratory birds, as over 300 species of birds have been sighted during spring migration, with warblers and shorebirds being favorites. Birders and guides come from across the U.S. and the world to see the birds, particularly during the annual Biggest Week in American Birding festival. Major Renovations The makeover movement meets modernization as Cedar Point remodels its popular beachfront resort and a retired roller coaster to greet the 2015 season. Hotel Breakers' transformation includes a covered portico, remodeled rooms, Starbucks, a lounge in the famous rotunda, expanded green space, and an outdoor water play area with zero-depth entry. Inside the park, the new ride experience, Rougarou, is a conversion of the former Mantis coaster. New floorless trains replaced the previous stand-up cars, but they run on the same track, and will offer a substantially more enjoyable ride. It will be a ride like no other in the park. Inaugural Film Festival The Sandusky State Theatre premieres a four-day -BLF&SJF'JMN'FTUJWBMPO4FQUFNCFSXJUIB red carpet, opening night party featuring the film "Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael", celebrating its 25th anniversary. The festival will showcase independent filmmakers whose recent films include shorts, documentaries, and features. There will be workshops in script-writing and film scoring led by industry experts, and a script competition. The winning script will be produced during the festival and a juried cash prize will be awarded to the winning director and TDSJQUXSJUFS'PSEFUBJMTWJTJUTBOEVTLZTUBUFDPN State Park Improvements The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has announced capital improvements to benefit Kelleys, North Bass, South Bass, Middle Bass, Catawba, and East Harbor state parks. Projects include improved campsite hookups, boating access, restroom upgrades, and hiking trails. Additionally, $6 million has been allocated specifically for renovating the old Lonz Winery property at Middle Bass Island State Park to create a facility that will invite a future public-private partnership. Snow Fest Sawmill Creek Resort provides a fantastic way to embrace winter's freeze with snowshoe and cross country trails, a skating pond, and warm beverages in a family-friendly pub. Underground Railroad Designation The National Park Service recently added the Rush R. It commemorates the efforts of the clandestine Underground Railroad members who helped slaves escape to freedom across Lake Erie.
