In 1894 C. W. Gurney, co-founder of Gurney's Seed and Nursery Company urged customers not to be put off by the time that lapses between planting a sapling and harvesting ripe fruit, Gurney said: "You do not 'wait' for the fruit. Time will go just the same, whether you have planted a tree or not." •10• SEED SAVERS EXCHANGE - Celebrating 40 Years - Keep It Growing The orchard at Seed Savers Exchange Heritage Farm is home to over 1,000 heritage apple varieties. From Co-founder Diane Ott Whealy: Kent and I first dreamt of establishing a heritage apple orchard at Heritage Farm over 25 years ago. Just as vegetable diversity was disappearing with the introduction of hybrid seed and consolidation of small seed companies, fruit diversity, particularly in apples, was also disappearing. Commercial markets focused increasingly on a handful of varieties that shipped well and looked pretty (never mind their flavor), and breeders were trying to develop all-purpose apples. Homesteaders understood their fruit and planted different varieties for different purposes: early apples for pies and sauce, late apples for cider, drying or overwintering. In 1900, the United States had nearly 9,000 named varieties of apples. Fewer than 1,500 of those exist today and their numbers continue to decline. In February of 1989 a small group of local apple aficionados spent nearly a week sitting around our kitchen table with dormant rootstocks and scionwood, grafting trees for the Seed Savers Exchange Historic Apple Orchard. Our orchard began with about 300 varieties, sourced from the USDA, SSE members, and local orchards. Today the orchard has become a valuable repository with over 1,000 apple varieties. However, the best way to protect these varieties is to have these trees planted in many areas around the country, not just in the orchard at Heritage Farm. That's where you can help. To celebrate our 40th anniversary, we are proud to offer 40 heritage apple varieties. When you plant these trees in your orchard or yard, you become a steward of a unique tree while adding diversity and history to your home. The complete story of Seed Savers Exchange Apple Orchard is written in Gathering: Memoir of a Seed Saver available on page 115 of this catalog. Thank you for supporting the Seed Savers Exchange Historic Apple Orchard 40 Apples for 40 Years To celebrate our 40 th anniversary, Seed Savers Exchange is proud to offer 40 heritage apple trees from our orchard to yours.
