Originally settled by hard working, hearty people who brought with them unshakable values and traditions, the community began to lay its roots in the mid 1800's, almost immediately following the completion of the Milwaukee & Northern Railroad in 1872. Random Lake's post office opened on Sept.16, 1872, and businesses began to spring up in the "downtown" area. The railroad meant a lot to the establishment of the village, but the 209-acre lake also played a large role. In August 1907, the Village of Random Lake was incorporated, separating from the Town of Sherman, and today covers 1.6 square miles. Some of the earliest businesses included an ice company, a brewery, as well as several taverns/hotels. The first Wilk family store opened in 1880 with farm and building supplies, and today shoppers can visit Wilk Furniture & Design in downtown Random Lake. The Doegnitz Hardware Store, which opened 8 www.randomlake.org in 1908, continues with more than a century of family ownership and operation. Around town you will find a relaxed atmosphere, prevalent in each of our businesses, and in the hearty greetings you will receive from our residents. Perhaps that comes from living in such close proximity to the lake. The spring-fed lake offers many prospects for recreation including swimming, boating, water skiing and fishing. Along with the scenic views around the lake, you will find an outstanding public beach with children's play area and well shaded picnic areas featuring a recently built pavilion, a docking area, as well as tree-lined paths. No "fast food" here, but this area is well known for "good food," prepared with tender loving care, and always served with a smile — from simple burgers to prime rib, but don't forget the pizza and pasta! You'll find friendly hospitality on every menu – always served with a smile. Young people can find plenty of positive activities, starting with the yearround programming at Lakeview Community Library. In the course of a year
